Dewsbury Greenway

New walking and cycling routes in Dewsbury are part of a national Sustrans project to enable people to make their everyday journeys on foot or by bike.

Until recently getting around Dewsbury and the surrounding areas on foot and by bike has been a tricky business. The new Greenway will reconnect Dewsbury's surrounding neighbourhoods to the town centre, which have been cut off by a ring road with up to 6 lanes of traffic, the River Calder, the Calder and Hebble Navigation canal, the hilly topography to the north and east and the busy road network outside the ring road.

The Greenway will make it quicker, safer and easier to get around Dewsbury on foot or by bike, linking the town centre with Saville Town, Ossett and Earlsheaton and provides a traffic free route through some stunning surroundings.

The first section of this route from Sands Lane playing fields to Preston Street in Earlsheaton will be built along the disused railway corridor, with a 'branch line' path on the bridge over the River Calder to reach the canal towpath in Savile Town.

The routes will also become part of the National Cycle Network and link with many well-established routes in Yorkshire, providing a traffic-free route to get Bradford or Wakefield

Route opens – first phase of the new scheme opens

The new route starts at the far end of Sands Lane, which leads off Railway Street near Sainsbury's supermarket. From Sands Lane a new ramp climbs to the former railway embankment where the route then splits. Continue straight on towards Preston Street, or bear right to take the branch over the River Calder to end at Savile Town Wharf.
