Treforest, University links and connections

Busy trunk roads, railway lines, rivers and housing all compete for space within the narrow valleys in South Wales and are just some of the barriers to walking and cycling that currently exist in this area.
The Treforest Connect2 scheme will create a mainly traffic-free path that will improve links from Treforest to the town centre of Pontypridd and network of traffic-free routes such as the famous Taff Trail and the new Church Village Community Route. In particular, the scheme will provide links over the busy A470, the River Taff, and the north-south railway line. This will be a benefit to pedestrians and cyclists in the local community by giving them the opportunity to travel to a variety of local facilities via a traffic-free path.
The scheme will also make it easier for the University of Glamorgan students to travel to Treforest by foot and bike from the Taff Trail and Church Village Community Route. Sustrans are working closely with the University of Glamorgan's Travel Plan Co-ordinator to encourage students and staff to travel more sustainably.
A Connect2 Steering Group has been formed to ensure strong community and stakeholder involvement. The group advises and supports Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and Sustrans with the scheme. The group is made up of a range of key local stakeholders including members of the community and representatives from the local primary schools and University of Glamorgan.
The proposals for the scheme were presented to the community at two public exhibitions held in April and May 2010.
Comments included:
"This seems a well thought out scheme - good use of the north bound slip road"
"A really exciting facility for the area - for local people and visitors. Look forward to it"
"Footbridge ramp taking too much room in playground"
Following the comments received at the public exhibition it was agreed that further options needed to be investigated and the preferred option was discussed with the Steering Group in May 2011.
