Port Talbot to Cwmafan and the Forest Park

image of Portrait Bench in Afan ValleyThe scheme aims to create safe, attractive footpaths and cycle routes between Port Talbot, Cwmafan, Pontrhydyfen and the popular Afan Forest Park, connecting local people to their shops, schools, work and green spaces.  The busy, existing roads between Pontrhydyfen, Cwmafan and Port Talbot are narrow and not ideal for walking and cycling.

The paths will continue to Afan Forest Park and beyond and will also connect people to local facilities in the town and to the sea front.

The route will link National Cycle Network Route 4 at Port Talbot to the south with Afan Forest Park and beyond to the north. Work has already started, with the first section being completed between Pontrhydyfen and Cwmafan.  This section of the scheme now boasts a tarmac shared user path to provide traffic free access between the two communities for cyclists and pedestrians.

Afan Valley Portrait Bench
The Portrait Bench is a simple bench with three life-size effigies of local heroes, chosen by the local community to represent their culture and history. The bench is part of a series of benches commissioned by Sustrans, creating a major new collection of public art across the UK.
The very first Portrait Bench was launched near Cwmafan featuring local heroes Richard Burton, Rob Brydon and Afan Forest Park Ranger, Dick Wagstaff.
