Shrewsbury, The Severnside Gap
Shrewsbury has an almost continuous riverside path along the Severn as the river loops around the town; however there is a section missing between Welsh Bridge and the train station. This Connect2 project aims to complete this riverside promenade by creating a direct route under the mainline railway at Castle Foregate. It will also complete a circuit of the town with a link along the remaining central line of the former canal towpath. Residents of the Mount Pleasant area will benefit from a direct and convenient route to the town centre, enabling local journeys to be made by foot or by bike.
The Greenfields Greenway has already been completed and is open for members of the public to use to make everyday journeys. Work is already underway for improvements around the end of Welsh Bridge.
Only a few months into the development of this project, Shropshire Council was awarded 'Cycling Town' status by Cycling England. This brought with it funding from the Department for Transport for the promotion of cycling in Shrewsbury giving a mutual benefit for these two projects.
