Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield and the Plants Brook Route

The Plants Brook Valley is a wonderful area of green open space, running through north east Birmingham. It is large enough to be considered as the local countryside for communities in the area, providing peaceful relaxation and the chance for recreational activities.

image of birminghamThis scheme will link the nearby communities to the valley, providing access for schools, hospitals, Sutton Coldfield town centre, the enormous Sutton Park and, at its southern end, the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Towpath.

From the canal at Castle Vale, routes will link up with new crossings of busy roads to brand new cycle and walking route through Pype Heyes Park. This will be the start of the main route that will run along the Plant's Brook all the way to Sutton Coldfield. The route will link the open spaces and parks at Pype Heyes and New Hall Valley with off-road route for cyclists and pedestrians. There will be links from this main route to Warmley and other local centres.

At the northern end of the route there will be links to new walking and cycling routes across Rectory Park to Good Hope Hospital and all the way east into Falcon Lodge.  From the top of the New Hall Valley the route will branch to give a safe and secure link all the way through Sutton Coldfield town centre to Sutton Park; this will bring with it the opportunity to visit Sutton Coldfield from the surrounding areas without using the car.  The entire new route will become National Cycle Network Route 534 and will link into National Route 535, which runs into Birmingham City centre.
