Shoreham, harbour crossing

For many years, a narrow drawbridge that links Shoreham's town to its beach has been difficult to cross, especially for cyclists.  The focus of this project will be to renew and improve this bridge by widening it and connect it to new paths on either side.  This new convenient route will offer a safer and quicker alternative to the existing diversion via the busy, main road.

Local journeys will be transformed by the bridge between Shoreham Beach and the main part of the town centre.  More people will be able to walk and cycle to their local areas and several schools in the area fully support this scheme and the many benefits it will give to local schoolchildren, who will be able to make everyday journeys to school by foot or by bike in ways which benefit their health and the environment.

Improvements will be made to the town centre include the pedestrianisation of East Street and building new road crossings.  The Shoreham scheme will connect with the seafront path between Worthing and Lancing and to the old railway line to Guildford, the "Downs Link" that connects the South and North Downs.

This new, improved bridge will provide a vital link into National Cycle Network Route 2, the South Coast Cycle Route that will eventually run from Dover through to Cornwall.
