Links to the north Kent coast between Whitstable and Reculver
The Crab and Winkle Way, which links Canterbury and Whitstable ends just before the railway line in Whitstable. This Sustrans' Connect2 project, will build two walking and cycling bridges crossing over Old Bridge Road, the railway and Teynham Road which will replace two missing bridges on the route of the world's third oldest railway. The route will then continue to the old railway line which leads to the harbour area, linking up to the town and making it easier and safer for local people to make everyday journeys by foot or bike.
The Oyster Bay Trail will link Whitstable harbour with Herne Bay and Reculver, using existing promenades and new paths at Bishopstone Glen and Reculver Country Park. The Crab and Winkle Way extension will link the southern part of Whitstable with the Community College and the town centre and will form part of National Cycle Network Route 1. It will enable local everyday journeys as well as longer distance leisure trips. The Oyster Bay Trail will link with the existing Viking Coastal Trail, a popular leisure route that follows the coastline from Reculver to Margate and Ramsgate.
