Hastings and Bexhill coastal connections

The Hastings to Bexhill coastal connection route will link to National Cycle Network Route 2 and complete a vital missing link between the towns. The existing walking and cycling route currently uses the busy A259 road, which is not well suited to walking or cycling as it carries over 32,000 vehicles each day. This magnificent seaside route with stunning coastal views stretches for 2km along beautiful coastline scenery. It will run alongside the railway line, linking the two existing traffic-free paths Galley Hill in Bexhill and Hastings promenade, to form a 5km overall traffic free route.

Many thousands of residents living in Bexhill and Hastings will benefit from this project, as local people will be able to make short, everyday local journeys between the two towns for leisure, to work, school and to the shops.

The Hastings to Bexhill costal connection route is now complete and open.

Stretching for 2km, this magnificent seaside route boasts stunning coastal views along beautiful coastline scenery. Running alongside a railway line it links two existing traffic-free paths, Galley Hill in Bexhill and Hastings promenade, to form a 5km overall traffic free route.

The route gives local people a traffic free alternative to the original walking and cycling route that uses the busy A259 road, which carries over 32,000 vehicles each day.

The construction of the coastal link was made possible due to an innovative construction method and sea defence works. It will later become the centrepiece of a wider cycling network for the area, with new links being developed to the proposed Pebsham Countryside Park in the north.

Many thousands of residents living in Bexhill and Hastings are benefiting from this project, as local people are now able to make short, everyday local journeys by foot or by bike between the two towns for leisure, work, the school journey and to the shops.

Hastings and Bexhill Portrait Bench

As part of a unique national public art project, a Portrait Bench has been installed alongside a section of the path. The Portrait Bench is a simple bench with three life-size effigies of local characters that are chosen by the community to represent the culture and history of the area.

Following a public vote, the three characters chosen for the Portrait Bench in Hastings and Bexhill are: Richard Ball, Tyrone Wildman and Spike Milligan.

For more information on the bench, download the Hastings and Bexhill Portrait Bench leaflet (pdf).
