Bedlington Connection
This new network of cycling and walking paths will link the east and west sides of Bedlington in a circular route that passes along the peaceful, relaxing riverbank of the River Blyth to the south and through Gallagher Park to the north. Gallagher Park is the site of the old Doctor Pit coal mine and has become a varied mix of woodland and meadows with football pitches, play areas and a new BMX track.
The scheme will bring the first designated cycle route to Bedlington and through supporting Links to Schools funding, will enable all the schools in Bedlington to access the main circular route directly. Students from the west side of Bedlington will be able to walk or cycle to school in the eastern area of the town.
The historic Furnace Bridge, at the south side of the river and a new section of route will make a direct link to the new walking and cycling scheme in Blyth, enabling commuters, visitors and day trippers to enjoy beautiful scenery along the Blyth Estuary, a site of special scientific interest for wading birds. The scheme also links to National Cycle Network, Coast and Castles Route 1, as it passes through Bedlington Station, north of the River Blyth.
