Weymouth to Portland - Olympic connections
Weymouth has a number of existing walking and cycling paths, however many of them are fragmented in places. The Rodwell Trail is an example of one of these existing traffic-free routes; however it is difficult for people to access, as it is divided by Newstead Road and means that people have to negotiate steep ramps and cross a busy road which is a barrier for many walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users.
The Weymouth and Portland scheme will provide a new, much-needed bridge over Newstead Road. A new, shared path will run alongside the new Weymouth Relief Road which will provide a direct route from Dorchester to Upwey. Enhancements to the Dorchester Road will provide cyclists with a safer, more direct route to the cycling hub at Westham Bridge. Cyclists and walkers will then be able to access the uninterrupted route along the Rodwell Trail to Portland Beach.
These new routes will considerably improve access to schools, leisure centres, local businesses, visitor attractions, the railway station and the seafront for walkers and cyclists.
This project route will link into the National Cycle Network Route 26 from Dorchester to Portland Beach and will also connect with National Route 2.
