Topsham, Exe Estuary Trail

The Exe Estuary Trail is a largely traffic-free, magnificent path that has been built beside the Exe from Exmouth to Exeter over the last few years as part of the National Cycle Network (Route 2). This has given cyclists and walkers a wonderful route alongside a famous birdwatching site with great vistas, away from the very busy A road.

The one remaining unsafe section with traffic is crossing the River Clyst on a narrow stone bridge entering Topsham.

This year a new parallel foot and cycle bridge is being built across the Clyst to connect the communities south and east of Topsham to this small picturesque town and onward to the city of Exeter. With the help of £250,000 of Big Lottery funding this bridge will be in place by the end of 2011. The bridge has been carefully designed in wood to be in keeping with its setting alongside a heritage structure, a bird reserve and in a location sensitive to flooding.

The completion of this route between Exmouth and Exeter is not only good for recreational walking and cycling but also allows safe commuting to work and school, plus shopping trips, for many local people.
