Newton Abbot and Kingsteignton: The Racecourse connection
The two communities of Kingsteignton and Newton Abbot are situated just over a mile apart, yet the only main access between them is Newton Road a heavily used A-road with no separate footpaths or cycle routes for local people to use.
The new walking and cycling routes in Newton Abbot and Kingsteignton will completely transform and improve this local area, with the building of a new walking and cycling route along the edge of the Racecourse and a new bridge across the River Teign near to the railway line. Safe cycle routes are being developed to the north and south linking to residential areas and schools and will enable everyday journeys to be made on foot and by bike.
Latest Update
With all the funding now in place, detailed designs have been drawn up for the new landmark bridge and the network of paths is already partially complete. In addition to the £500,000 of Big Lottery funding, £305,000 has been allocated from the Sustrans' Links to Schools programme to provide the new paths.
In 2011, work begins on the last stretch of new path, beside the racecourse and the new bridge over the River Teign is planned to be completed by 2012
