Five Arches, Midsomer Norton Connect2 to Radstock
The new Five Arches Greenway provides a great traffic free route to get between the towns of Radstock and Midsomer Norton, overcoming the hilly terrain around the Radstock area which currently makes walking and cycling difficult.
The Five Arches Greenway and Portrait Bench was officially opened in September 2011 with a celebration day and special guests with Michael Eavis of Glastonbury Festival and Cllr Rob Appleyard. See a video of the celebrations.
The route passes along a disused railway path and enables these two communities to get to the town centre, shops, leisure and school facilities including the new skate park at Gullock Tyning nearby, on foot and by bike, avoiding the existing busy roads in the local area.
School children at Norton Hill School will particularly benefit from this project as they will be able to walk and cycle to school safely, away from the busy local roads. New crossing have been installed outside the school near to the busy Somervale Road and Charlton Road.
This scheme dramatically improves the traffic-free routes in the area, enabling local people to walk and cycle for everyday local journeys. It also provides a peaceful haven for wildlife and with the new art projects and bench creates an enjoyable, relaxing place for people to visit.

The project is a joint partnership between Sustrans, Bath & North East Somerset Council and Norton Radstock Action Group. The Five Arches Greenway links to the Norton Radstock Greenway, which links in to National Cycle Network Route 24, The Colliers Way.
Five Arches Portrait Bench
The Five Arches Portrait Bench, part of a unique national public art project, is a simple bench with three life-size effigies of local characters chosen by the local community to represent the culture and history of the area. These benches are being designed and installed on walking and cycling routes across the UK as part of Sustrans national project delivering the National Cycle Network into the heart of communities.
The Five Arches Portrait Bench features Glastonbury Festival farmer Micheal Eavis, local mountain biker Katy Curd and a local railway engine driver. For more information on the bench download the Portrait Bench leaflet.
