Derry - Londonderry, greenway and cycle path links
The Waterside Greenway will provide a tranquil, convenient and direct route linking to the Peace Bridge, the bus station, city centre and the regeneration spaces at Ebrington and St Columb's Park. Creating a traffic-free and healthy way for local people to make everyday journeys to work, to school and the shops. Once open, it will complete a network of traffic-free routes around the River Foyle benefitting both local residents and visitors to the area.
A 4km traffic-free path along east bank of River Foyle between the Foyle Bridge will connect communities in the east and west of the city to the new Peace Bridge across the Foyle. The 3.5m path width and constant gradients are suitable for walking, cycling, people pushing buggies and wheelchair users.
The first section of the new route, from Peace Bridge to St Columb's Park was completed in April 2012. Construction of the final section, from St Columb's Park to Foyle Bridge is due to start in August 2012 and be open for use early in 2013.
Join in the celebrations for the opening of the first section of the Waterside Greenway in St Columb's Park on 2nd June 2012. Find out more on our events pages.
Derry Portrait Bench
The Portrait Bench is a simple bench with three life-size effigies of local heroes, chosen by the local community to represent their culture and history. A local media and press campaign was held to seek nominations from the general public on characters for the portrait bench, the final characters chosen are Dr Tom McGinley, Francis Edward Ledwidge and Amelia Earhart. The bench is part of a series of benches commissioned by Sustrans, creating a major new collection of public art across the UK. For more information on the bench download the Derry Portrait Bench leaflet. (pdf)
