Nantwich to Crewe along the A530 corridor
Nantwich is a small market town with a small population of just 12,000 residents; just four miles away are the 68,000 residents of Crewe a manufacturing town famous for its railways and Rolls Royce and Bentley cars. Culturally distinct, these two Cheshire towns are physically separated by a narrow strip of greenbelt.
This project will be a unifying ribbon of greenspaces connecting together these two neighbouring Cheshire towns with a rural promenade from the delightful Nantwich riverside to the historic Queen's Park in Crewe, which is just about to begin a restoration program.
The scheme will provide an attractive route for everyday local journeys of every kind, heading home from work, travelling to the station or leisure journeys out into the countryside. An existing gap between National Cycle Network Routes 45 and 5 will also be partially filled thanks to this route, which will connect schools, parks and the residential areas of Crewe and Nantwich. Further work is ongoing to improve the links into the nearby business parks, colleges and amenities.
Crewe to Nantwich Portrait Bench
The Portrait Bench is a simple bench with three life-size effigies of local heroes, chosen by the local community to represent their culture and history.
The Greenway runs from the nineteenth century railway town of Crewe to the ancient market town of Nantwich. Therefore, it was considered appropriate to choose characters representing the history of both towns. The final chosen characters were a railway man, a roundhead and a roman soldier.
