Knowsley Mineral Greenway

The Knowsley Mineral Greenway scheme offers a great solution to the difficulties currently faced by pedestrians and cyclists travelling from Huyton and Whiston, to Cronton. Currently, constant heavy traffic at the Tarbock Island roundabout and nearby linked roads, has made it increasingly difficult for local people to make everyday journeys by foot or by bike, to reach work, local schools and the shops.

Knowsley imageThis project will use a traffic-free greenway through Stadt Moers Park along the disused Mineral Railway Line through to Cronton Colliery, and will also use quiet roads. Built up communities of Huyton, Prescot and Whiston will be re-connected to beautiful rural countryside, giving people the chance to enjoy the relaxing green spaces and enjoy walking and cycling for leisure as well as providing an essential link for others wanting to travel sustainably to work and school.

Local people will have the opportunity to access three beautiful country parks, Stadt Moers, Pex Hill and the new Cronton Colliery site, being redeveloped by the Land Restoration Trust. The route will pass under the M57 motorway at Stadt Moers Park and over the M62 motorway using the Potters Pitt bridge which was recently refurbished by the Highways Agency. It's hoped that further, additional paths will be created from this new route in the future, in the local areas of Huyton, Whiston and Prescot.

 Knowsley Portrait Bench

The local bench is sited in Stadt Moers Park, on a new walking and cycling route that forms part of a network of accessible routes connecting Huyton and Whiston. The Portrait Bench is a simple bench with three life-size effigies of local heroes, chosen by the local community to represent their culture and history, the final chosen charecters are Joan Kershaw, a colliery worker and a nurse. The bench is part of a series of benches commissioned by Sustrans, creating a major new collection of public art across the UK. For more information on the bench download the Knowsley Portrait Bench leaflet (pdf).
