Chester, connections over the Dee
The Sustrans' Connect2 scheme in Chester, consists of four parts which will connect communities in the four corners of this city to the historic walled centre, making everyday local journeys easier and quicker. 120,000 people live in Chester and will benefit from the scheme.
The first two parts of the network have already been completed one extending the Chester Greenway east under the M53 to the nearby village of Mickle Trafford, the other has completed new ramps to the Greenway from the Deva Link Road and the Shropshire Union canal.
The third part of the scheme had been planned as a walking and cycling bridge to Curzon Park supported from the cross supports of the railway bridge over the river to help improve access to residents living South West of the city centre. The match funding for this from Cycle England will not be available now due to time constraints. Currently a revised route is being discussed with the council which will make use of the Handbridge river crossing which too will benefit residents in the south west area of the city.
Finally, a new walking and cycling bridge crossing the Dee will connect the south west of the city to the south east. It will also become the direct route from Great Broughton the south west via the Meadows to the city centre. This final part of the scheme is currently undergoing a feasibility study.
