Bury, the Woolfold Gap

Walking and cycling into Bury town centre from the surrounding communities of Greenmount, Tottington, Woolford and Brandlesholme is becoming the only way to travel for local people.  A new bridge and network of traffic-free paths and quiet roads is being developed linking communities north of Bury into the centre of the town and out onto the Kirklees Trail to neighbouring countryside.

A new five span bridge, replaces the former railway viaduct demolished many years ago.  It is the centrepiece of the traffic-free route, which takes advantage of the former Bury to Holcombe Brook railway line.

Latest update

Work on the 65-metre long structure, which crosses high above the Kirklees Valley, began in spring 2011 and is now complete.  The new paths that provide the link across the valley are now complete.  The new route opens up views into the pennines not available to the general public since the closure of the former railway line.

The completed route is an integral part of the National Cycle Network route 6 creating links north and south of Bury.

Bury Portrait Bench

The Bury Portrait Bench, part of a unique national public art project, is a simple bench with three life-size effigies of local characters chosen by the community to represent the local culture and history. The bench features Bury’s own Ralph Rooney, walker, Reg Harris, cyclist and David Swinthenbank, artist and activist.
