South Bermondsey, disused rail bridge links

South Bermondsey is within the densely populated London Borough of Southwark in South East London.  The focus of this scheme will be to improve and re open a disused railway bridge which will provide convenient, direct access to South Bermondsey train station for pedestrians and cyclists and eventually beyond into the London Borough of Lewisham for thousands of local residents.

Image of South Bermondsey bridgeThe bridge currently crosses Rotherhithe New Road, and will connect Stubbs Drive to the train station.  In the south west, the main new route will link to Burgess Park, via Stevenson Crescent and Abercorn Way and in the north, to Durand's Wharf in Rotherhithe.

This scheme will improve a number of green spaces along the route and allow access into local schools, shops and other local amenities, enabling people to make local, everyday journeys by foot and by bike.

The main route will connect Burgess Park to Stubbs Drive and the bridge, with a further link along Verney Road and Ilderton Road heading into the Lewisham Borough along Surrey Canal Road.  Heading northwards the route connects up to Greenland Dock and Russia Dock woodland, crossing the National Cycle Network Route 4. The route finishes at Durand's Wharf on the Thames, the site of Sustrans proposed Thames walking and cycling bridge.
