Watton and Griston link
During the second world war, residents of Griston lost their direct road link with the nearby market town of Watton. Over the years, as traffic levels have increased, the loss of this direct link has become more evident as the busy A1075 has become a less attractive option.
A long awaited new walking and cycling route to link up these two communities has now been agreed and a direct link away from traffic will run on the line of the former road across the airfield that lies between Watton and Griston.
The scheme has been held up while legal agreements have been reached with landowners. In particular the decision of the MoD to sell the airfield has had a significant impact and has led to some slight changes to the route. Details are now almost agreed and it is hoped that construction can take place in summer 2012, with Norfolk County Council now taking a lead in terms of delivery.
Works in Watton have already been completed and have included a new toucan crossing and path to Wayland High School and works along Gilmans Drift and Norwich Road. These are already proving valuable enabling local people to make everyday journeys by foot or by bike.
