Royston railway crossing
Royston's railway line runs through its centre and, as the railway has gradually grown in size, the town's population has expanded further away from the existing crossings. The expansion of the railway has gradually become a barrier, as many of the residential areas are on the opposite side of the railway, making local journeys difficult including reaching schools and leisure facilities. At the moment, there are virtually no cycling facilities in Royston and some people have resorted to driving out to the bypass to get across the railway.
This scheme will create a new subway across the railway, which aims to make walking and cycling an attractive option for everyday, local journeys across the town. Located near to many residential areas along the way the new route will connect school children, commuters and local people to schools, employment and leisure facilities.
The new railway crossing location was chosen after careful consideration and a subway was agreed as the least intrusive and best option. Works have been underway since the Spring preparing the way for the new subway, with electricity, gas and drainage having been diverted and excavation for the new ramps having been completed. A concrete "box", which will form the new subway was built on site in November and it will be moved into position during the closure of the railway during the Christmas period.
The scheme is due to be opened in Spring 2012 and the subway will link with a network of new routes already completed. Hertfordshire County Council has been leading the design process and Birse Rail is the contractor leading on the construction works.
