Cheshunt, crossing the A10 to reach the Lee Valley

The new walking and cycling bridge over the busy A10 in Cheshunt was officially opened on Tuesday 9th November 2010. The local community then held the grand opening of the whole walking and cycling network plus the local Portrait Bench unveiling was held on the 19th may 2011.

The Paul Cully Bridge links together communities east and west of the busy A10, enabling members of the local community to walk and cycle more easily to nearby green open spaces - Lee Valley Regional Park, Cedars Park and beyond to National Cycle Network Route 1.

The bridge and network of new walking and cycling routes also extends to St Mary's School and Bury Green Road and this is proving particularly popular with school children. As well as also providing local people with a direct, convenient route to Waltham Cross town centre and nearby railway stations and amenities. Download the local travel map (pdf) to help you get around Cheshunt, Waltham Cross and Bury Green on foot and by bike.

Watch video interviews from Stephanie Benbow - St Mary's School Head Teacher and from local parent Matt Smith and hear about the impact the new routes have made for local pupils. Read about the scheme on page 4 of the June edition of Connected (pdf), the project newsletter.

Cheshunt Portrait Bench

The local Portrait Bench can now also be seen along the route between the Paul Cully Bridge and St Mary's School. The Portrait Bench, part of a unique national public art project, is a simple bench with three life-size effigies of local characters chosen by the community to represent the local culture and history. The local bench features US airman Lieutenant Ellis, a canoeist and a badger. For more info download the Portrait Bench leaflet (pdf).

The Paul Cully Bridge

The Paul Cully Bridge was named after the late council officer who was a driving force behind the scheme, and it will provide a safe route across the A10 for hundreds of children travelling to St Mary's School as well as also linking together Bury Green, Waltham Cross and Cheshunt.

Mr Cully's widow, Carol commented "It is an honour to Paul's memory that the Council are recognising his hard work and dedication to the Council in this way. He would have been very proud, as we, the family are of a very special man."

"Paul gave this Council 40 years of loyal dedicated service. He was a most amiable person who was universally respected and showed outstanding commitment above the call of duty. One of his finest achievements is the bridge over the A10. Sadly, Paul never lived to see the first child use this bridge." said Councillor Paul Mason, Leader of Broxbourne Council.
