Mary joined Sustrans in June 2009
I was born in rural North Devon and lived a long way from everything, so had to cycle if I wanted to go anywhere. I now cycle much more for pleasure as well and enjoy the sense of freedom and fun cycling gives. I love the idea that anyone can cycle and by encouraging children to enjoy it from a young age, they'll develop and continue a healthy cycling habit throughout their lives.
Before Bike It, Mary was a School Travel Plan Advisor in Lancashire, encouraging schools to promote active travel to schools. I was also a primary school teacher and I love the enthusiasm and creativity which comes from working with children; never a dull moment.

What's Mary up to?
Last term was very busy with over 1500 children and lots of adults who enjoyed their Bike It Breakfasts, with every child within school then taking part in cycle skills sessions. Many children have now learnt how to fix punctures and over 200 children learnt to ride a bike for the first time, which is great!
Thank you to all the wonderful children, parents and staff who are always so enthusiastic and willing!
This term I am planning lots of Bike It Breakfasts, Learn to ride sessions and maintenance work with all my new schools, whilst still helping my existing schools.
Let the fun commence!
