Lucy joined Sustrans in June 2009

I've cycled to work and school for as long as I can remember. I did my Cycling Proficiency (now Bikeability) training in Year 5. I can still remember learning to set my pedals and feeling excited when I turned right at a junction. Since then I have lived and worked in Toronto, Paris, London, Manchester and Sheffield and cycled my commute and got out of the city for fun at weekends as often as I could. One of my favourite routes circles the Place d'Etoile, at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Cycling gives you a great feeling of independence, plus it's cheap, green and keeps you fit. I'm really excited about working as a Bike It officer in Merseyside, as the job is a great compromise between my teaching skills and my sense of adventure.

Before Bike It, Lucy's varied working career includes stints as a lighting and design technician in the theatre, and she retrained as a teacher in 2005.

Lucy's schools for 2011/12:

What's Lucy up to?

I am really looking forward to the Spring Term, we will announce the characters for the Portrait Bench on the Connect 2 scheme in Rochdale and begin work organising the competition in Stockport. I hope to speak to all the past Bike It Schools this term to get a sense of who is following up the project themselves and will be able to earn another School Mark; hopefully I’ll find some more schools that can be awarded Silver! The Big Pedal should be a big adventure this year and I would like to be in all participating schools doing activities to support the school’s endeavours. We’ll be doing Learn To Ride as usual this spring to get the infants the skills to join in with all the exciting Bike It activities. I will also be launching the Bike It Heroes scheme that we have been inspired to create by the excitement of the 2012 Olympics so watch this space…
