Susan joined Sustrans in October 2011

It’s fantastic that due to the success of the programme, Bike It has spread westwards into this beautiful part of Wales.  So far 10 schools have signed up to the Bike It programme with another 2 joining in the New Year.

Prior to joining Sustrans in October 2011, I was a primary school teacher in Cardiff very much involved in Eco Schools, Recycled Crafts and International linking. I was lucky enough to spend one year teaching in Lesotho, Africa, an unforgettable and humbling experience, which resulted in a strong partnership being formed between the schools in Cardiff and Lesotho.

I’ve always had a love of cycling and have particularly enjoyed taking off on cycle trips in Austria, Czech Republic, Switzerland and the North of Scotland – definitely a bit of a hilly theme going on! My cycle to work in the morning along the Brunel Trail, takes me through a nature reserve where I have been privileged enough to see a host of different wildlife including a spectacular kingfisher! Cycling to me is very much about connecting to the environment as you can experience so much more of the world on two wheels.

Susan’s schools for 2011/12

What’s Susan up to?

It has been a fabulous end to the first term of Bike It in Pembrokeshire! So far 10 schools have signed up to the project with a further 2 more joining in January.

Assemblies, meetings with Head teachers, school champions, staff and parents have taken place in most schools and Bike It Crews have been selected.  Sue has contacted local Bike Shops including Enterprise Cycles in Neyland, which has kindly donated prizes for school fairs and cyling equipment for use in schools. They have also agreed to attend Dr Bikes in the Spring.

To round off this festive term, 2 schools, Tenby Junior Community School and Golden Grove Community Primary have gone full steam ahead and have held School Fairs with Bike It Stalls, a Bring a Bike Sale and Bling a Bike and Helmet Event. Coverage of the Festive Bling a Bike event was published in the Tenby Observer which was provided excellent publicity for the Bike It project.

In Pembrokeshire Bike It is working closely with the Road Safety and Transport Strategy teams Pembrokeshire County Council’s to ensure adequate cycle storage is in place in the Pembrokeshire Bike It schools. It is hoped that funding from Haverfordwest’s Sustainable Travel Centre Project, will ensure that almost all of the schools will have Cycle Storage by the end of the Spring Term.
