Richard joined Sustrans in October 2008
"I'm originally from Derbyshire, where I became hooked on cycling around Matlock and the Peak District. I moved to the South of England after University and eventually set up home in Luton, which whilst not as picturesque as Derbyshire, has lots going on and plenty of nearby rural roads and off road tracks to explore.
"I help run the local Cycling Club (Icknield Road Club) and am a Qualified British Cycling Coach. I dabble with cycle racing of various types and recently completed my first cyclo-cross race. I'm married with two teenage daughters who I plan to test out my Bike-It ideas on and who can help me to anticipate and overcome the issues that people their age have to deal with.
"The Bike It officer role is a dream job for me and I'm looking forward to making the biggest contribution that I can to my schools in Luton, St Albans and Bedford."
Before becoming part of the Bike It team Richard worked for Luton Borough Council as a Bikeability Instructor, which included work at some of the schools he will be looking after this year as a Bike It officer.
Richard's schools for 2011/12 are:
- Downside Primary
- Farley Junior
- Hillborough Junior
- Icknield Primary
- Leagrave Primary
- Lealands High
- Ramridge Primary
- Sacred Heart Primary
- Wigmore Primary
What's Richard up to?
Richard is delighted that schools in each of his regions now have their School Mark Bronze, to support a sustained level of cycling promotion within school. Congratulations go to Fleetville Juniors, Foxdell Juniors, Daubeney Middle School and Sundon Park Juniors. More schools are aiming for Bronze in the autumn. Richard takes Sustrans to seven new schools in September, and will be working hard to ensure that cycle parking is installed and the children are keen to cycle in readiness for spring.
Funding from Luton Borough Council is helping maximise the number of children, in Luton who are benefiting from the project. Richard is also working closely with other Sustrans projects in Luton, including working with Chris Wilkinson who is helping to manage a fleet of bikes for Luton Schools. Due to loss of funding Richard is no longer delivering Bike It in Bedford and St Albans, but St Albans do now have Stuart Duncan working there on Bike It.
The Bike It Bus pilot at Sundon Park Juniors in Luton went very well, and Richard hopes that other schools will adopt it next year. The cycling equivalent of a walking bus, in addition to its obvious benefits, it is a highly visible activity that enhances the community's awareness of and interest in cycling.
