Bike It in Great Yarmouth
The Sustrans Bike It project in Great Yarmouth has come to an end after two years due to lack of funding and Kevin House, former Bike It Officer is no longer working for Sustrans. So, what have we achieved?
We have undoubtedly raised cycling levels in Great Yarmouth, quadrupling the number of pupils coming to school by bike which is amazing. The project has raised the profile of cycling in the schools and wider community and broken down the barriers that stopped bike journeys to school. Schools have invested in cycling policies, installed new cycle storage and welcomed us into school to spread the message.
Our biggest achievements are:
- Regular Dr. Bike Sessions - Making bikes safe and roadworthy
- Bikeability - After years of cycle training being delivered by non cyclists, we have revolutionised cycle training in schools by offering Bikeability, on road training delivered by cyclists for cyclists!
- Cycle Sport - Team GB’s most successful sport is being delivered regularly in GY schools
- Adults cycling - After years of thinking cycling was too dangerous or too hard, adults are finally taking control and getting on their bikes. Adults are our most valuable role models!
- Partnership with Great Yarmouth Cycling Club - offering cycling to all ages and all abilities within the local community and beyond
- Bulging bike sheds
- Increasing activity levels
- Empowerment - Not worrying about things that might happen but controlling the things that you can control and getting on and doing it
