John joined Sustrans in December 2011
Cycling for me is a way of life, and being employed by Sustrans to pass on that passion to an enthusiastic younger generation is simply fantastic. Cycling is cheap, healthy, environmentally friendly and by far the most enjoyable way to travel around and explore places. I feel very privileged to ride around Cambridge most days and be part of the cycling culture there. I try to take a little piece of that ethic away with me each time when I’m home riding around St Neots. Here cycling is very much up and coming thanks in large part to some great new route developments. I’ve been lucky enough to have had time to cycle around many cities in Europe such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna, Riga and Bratislava. These experiences have definitely broadened my cycling horizons and I guess in the long run I would love to see cycling one day being adopted on that scale in the U.K.
Before Bike It, John spent three years Bikeability cycle training in and around Cambridgeshire. As an adult cycle trainer for Cambridgeshire County Council he helped just under 250 people to learn to ride before moving on to focus mostly on primary school courses and bike maintenance workshops as a freelance instructor. He also completed a degree in Criminal Psychology in Nottingham.

What's John up to?
The Spring Term has been a very busy and very productive few months for the Bike It project in Cambridgeshire. It’s been full speed ahead in St Neots as the town is new to the project, and my continued support in the Cambridge Schools has meant they have continued making good progress. The Big Pedal has of course largely dominated the terms activities, and there’s been lots and lots of events in the calendar in response to this. We’ve had Dr Bike sessions, obstacle courses, cycle skills days, lose the stabilizer sessions and even a Longest Bike Chain event just to name a few. I’ve been really impressed with how well all the schools engaged with the race, and I think for the St Neots schools it’s been the spark needed to get Bike It fully up and running!
