Bike It and my child

Bike It boy braves weather

Why Sam loves Bike It

"There are lots more of us cycling and it's fun! I'm a good, safe cyclist now and know exactly what to do on the roads. I find it easier on hills now and can use my bike to travel anywhere. Bike It also taught me how to repair my bike if it starts making funny noises!"

If you want your child to go to a Bike It school, find an officer near you or ask a teacher or your local authority to ask for Bike It online. Find out more with Brilliant Bike It or watch this short film.

Happy Bike It girlMum Alison amazed at daughter's progress

Mum Alison says, "Our five-year-old wanted to cycle to school for a Bike It challenge. We didn't feel she could cycle the hilly mile, but after much pestering we took her on a trial and were amazed at how well she coped. She now cycles regularly and loves it. I've since bought a bike (with a child-seat for my son), and we even cycle to work and on holiday, too whereas we used to drive virtually everywhere! We love Bike It. Tt's simply made a real difference to our family."

What's a Bike It school, and what's the School Mark

Bike It schools have a highly trained cycling officer working with them for at least a year. This Bike it officer runs assemblies and activities to get pupils excited about cycling, with practical sessions to give them the skills and confidence to put the enthusiasm to good use. They also help get bike storage and cycle training in schools and work on identifying safe routes to schools. The Bike It School Mark scheme is then in place to help this new cycling culture last. Look at Bike It officer Rachel's page to give you an idea (with a great YouTube clip).

Why does Sustrans work in schools?

Just 2% of UK children cycle to school, even though most of them want to. Denmark reacted to similar figures by invested heavily in cycling provision - 50% of Danish children now cycle to school. We believe that such a transformation is possible in the UK too, and that's why we work in schools. Oh and the kids absolutely love every second of it, too.
