Diglis Bridge, Diglis Weir, Worcester, National Route 46Tranquillity is a State of Mind by Liminal

In the next phase of their work on 'Tranquillity is a State of Mind', Liminal are working with artist Rob Colbourne in Worcester. Their focus is on National Route 46 alongside the new Diglis Bridge around Diglis Weir on the River Severn, part of Sustrans' Connect2 programme. They will invite the community to get involved with exploring the site, listening to the continual sound of flowing water, and the impact of this on other ambient sounds.   This development follows from the Wellcome Trust Research Award in 2008 and is funded through Arts Council England.

The Valleys Cycle Network

100 miles of new paths in South Wales has an ambitious programme of art commissioning and community involvement.  Sustrans is drawing together partnership funding and European monies to develop this great opportunity.  We have a national call out for artists to register their interest in the programme and we are looking forward to realising a new collection of innovative contemporary artworks.

The Way of the Roses

This long distant coast to coast route travels between Whitehaven and Bridlington linking Lancaster and Yorkshire.  Curator Kathy Newbury is selecting artists to make major works along the route which includes the new section of cycling and walking route at Harrogate, part of the Sustrans' Connect2 programme.  It also passes close to The Coldstones Cut at Nidderdale, North Yorkshire - a fantastic earth work by artist Andrew Sabin which is nearing completion.

Blyth and BedlingtonThe Red Tricycle, part of community consultation designed by Aether and Hemera

Artists Aether and Hemera are working with Inspire Arts Agency along the new Blythe to Bedlington route part of Sustrans' Connect2 programme.  They have proposed inventive lighting installations at eight key locations along the route.

Weymouth Bridge

A new bridge designed by Bruce Williams, including stunning new handrails reflecting the rope twining rhythm, will be installed as one of Sustrans' Connect2 schemes and in time for the 2012 Olympics, when Weymouth will host the Olympic water sports.

 Artwork and Play

There are many opportunities along the National Cycle Network to explore the relationship between art and play. There are hundreds of miles of safe off road walking and cycling paths that link to local parks and other facilities that are great for creative and informal play. The Art Programme is exploring opportunities to continue developing playful interactive work.

The Art Programme's work with Sustrans Connect2 projects to create Portrait benches continues. The Portrait Bench is a growing collection of characters selected by local groups to represent them - some of the characters we'll know and some we won't - chosen for their philanthropy, achievements, heroism or affection - around 240 characters across the UK will be installed by 2013.

Sustrans supports art initiatives along to the National Cycle Network and is keen to work with other partners to integrate artwork where ever possible.
