Seat constructed from wooden cubes by artist Walter Jack, National Route 41.Sustrans works with artists, crafts people, designers and architects to create landmark artworks, special seats, bridges and viewing platforms, gateways and waymarkers along sections of the National Cycle Network.

All these aspects of the art programme help to maximise the impact of key areas of of Sustrans work, particularly in relation to urban renewal schools, education and community consultation. This work also creates opportunities for artists to research particular interests, study archives or interview residents to collect information to inform high quality work that interprets the natural and cultural history of the area.

Flood Defence by Gerry Judah (2001). Thames, London, National Route 4.The work adds significance to the Network creating artworks as destinations in their own right and increasing access to and interest in the arts. Every specially designed seat on the Network is carefully oriented to take account of the local materials, the gradient and views from the path and the environment of each site.

Bridges and viewing platforms provide important features to link the local communities to each other and to the Network physically and visually. They become the highlight of journeys and key points to observe local rivers and the surrounding landscape.

Gateways and waymarkers provide unique and memorable places to access and navigate sections of the Network and help to provide continuity, rhythm and unity along each route.
