The first Prospectives project to be launched is 'Tranquillity is a State of Mind' by artist and architect duo David Prior and Frances Crow (Liminal).

Liminal will lead a research process including specialists in architecture, sound art, audiology, neuroscience and acoustics.

As a group they will consider our understanding of sound from radically different perspectives and will frame new questions about the relationship between our sonic environment and personal wellbeing. This process of collective research will reveal new ways of thinking  and inform the basis for a practical proposal for a listening aid to be cited at an appropriate cite on the National Cycle Network.

This project has been made possible through a Wellcome Trust Arts Award.

Programme development

‘Prospectives' will involve exceptional artists in an entirely new collaborative, research based commissioning process. Artists will work with specialists and communities to explore issues that are key to 21st century living: climate change, the natural world, design of public space, and health and well-being.

Seed funding from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation enabled the programme to be developed, including the set-up of a curatorial group to select eight artists and a range of specialists to take part. Other artists include Neville Gabie, Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey, Christian Nold, Lise Autogena, Platform, Peter Fend, and Annie Cattrell.

Initial proposals range from scientific studies - looking at the psychological and physiological effects of movement created by walking and cycling - to practical investigations into urban living, and participative and performance work linked to the notion of the journey and arrival.
