Colliers Way artworks

Colliers Way is a 23-mile rural route that leaves the Kennet and Avon Canal at Monkton Combe and meanders through impressive countryside along a disused railway line. A free leaflet illustrating the cycle route and artworks is available from Sustrans on tel: 0845 113 0065 or download (pdf).

The Brief:

Artists worked with local schools to develop work based around the concept of a ‘Linear Orchard' which was planted by Sustrans on Colliers Way. The orchard consists of English apple trees planted at intervals to highlight disappearing orchards in Somerset, and echo self seeded fruit trees (from apple cores thrown from trains) along the route.

“The apple trees and enamel signs fit so well into this path, small scale and almost secretive, I look out for each one, the old names are almost like poetry.” Local Resident.

School Work

Artists Jon Easterby, Louise Baker, Liz Turrel and Imi Maufe worked with local schools and parents to develop artwork for the project. Artists' and students' ideas were then exhibited as part of a Schools Exhibition at Radstock Museum.
