The Course by Michael Pinsky

Lea Manor High School students cycling the Course by Michael Pinsky

"Michael is great to work with, he has so many ideas. The ride around the estate makes you want to do it for real" (Teacher at Lea Manner School)

"I just see things I've never noticed before" (Local Resident)

In a world where leisure activity is increasingly shifting to virtual reality, contained within the boundaries of an impressive three metre cubed wood pavilion, this temporary installation explored the boundary between fantasy and reality using the latest technology.

Michael Pinsky worked in conjunction with community artist Susanna Oliver, who undertook workshop sessions with students from Lea Manor High School.

Virtual sculpture created by Lea Manor High School studentThe students created a series of fantastical micro-sculptures which were then inserted into a pre-filmed DVD of landscape of Leagrave in Luton, as if travelling along the network of local cycle paths known as The Marsh Farm Loop, on National Route 6.

There were five potential routes to traverse, each one of which mirrored actual cycle routes in the area combined with the school's virtual artwork.

Each virtual route was linked to a stationery bicycle. Using pioneering technology the screen selection was linked with pedal movements and synchronized to react to the gradient and speed of cycling. When pedaling cyclist took part in a fantasy tour.
