Art & the Travelling Landscape

Genome Stripes by Katy Hallett

Art & the Travelling Landscape increases access to the arts as an imaginative and inspiring way to explore wider aspects of human experience, and attract people to try walking and cycling.

We have worked with artists and communities to develop an extensive range of work inspired by the changing environment along the National Cycle Network.

Each collection is shaped by local variations and circumstances to create landmarks, celebrate local characteristics, and engage with local communities to make enjoyable and memorable journeys.

Our new programme of 'Prospectives' will involve exceptional artists in an entirely new research based process.

Artists will work with specialists and local communities to explore a range of issues at the heart of Sustrans work and key to 21st century living: design of public space, health and well-being, the natural world, and climate change.

Alongside Sustrans UK wide Connect 2 programme, Art & the Travelling Landscape will be working to install unique street furniture in Connect 2 areas. Each community will have the opportunity to design their own 'Portrait Bench' where people can sit or stand on their own or in groups to have a photo taken as a memento of their visit.

Working with Sustrans DIY Streets programme, we will help residents in ten streets across England to commission artists and choose final designs for an artistic feature within their new street layout.

Further collaborative work commissioned through Art & the Travelling Landscape includes 'A Cautionary Tale' by Pharmacopoeia, which illustrates the health and economic burden of the obesity epidemic in the UK.
