Make your move Kirkcaldy

Make your move Kirkcaldy is helping more people in Kirkcaldy to walk, cycle and use public transport for local journeys. Sustrans is working in partnership with Fife Council and the Scottish Government, to improve walking and cycling routes in the town, and deliver community events, and a range of other measures to inspire local people to think about the way they travel.

The network of routes for both cyclists and pedestrians is continuously being improved, including recent work to provide new paths on Dunnikier Way and Oriel Road. To help you find these routes, a new map and information leaflet (pdf) has also been developed.

Activities and eventsCycling in Kirkcaldy

During 2011, Make your move Kirkcaldy ran a series of successful events with activities for all ages. These included bike try-outs and stunt displays, and a fun day in Ravenscraig Park in September which attracted more than 800 visitors.

We have more exciting events planned for 2012, as well as other activities such as cycle training and led cycle rides – perfect if you are new to cycling or haven’t been on bike for a while.

Look out for the events programme for spring and summer 2012, which will be published here soon.

2011 Review

The first year of the project saw many successes and interesting developments. Hundreds of people attended events, and more than 500 school pupils took part in Bike Week activities. We’ve got lots of great ideas for 2012, to tackle some of the barriers to cycling and walking in Kirkcaldy. Meanwhile the new and improved paths are being well used not just by cyclists but pedestrians, families with buggies and joggers as well.

I Bike

The I Bike schools programme is now well underway in nine Kirkcaldy schools (along with two other Fife schools). Bike crews have been recruited in each school to help cycling officer James Sloggie with delivery of a range of inspiring activities. Dr Bike sessions have already proved hugely popular with 90 bikes being brought to one primary school on a November morning, for safety checks and repairs.

CycleStart

The CycleStart programme of volunteer-led rides got underway in Kirkcaldy in November, helping people to get out cycling and build their confidence with rides of up to an hour at a leisurely pace. CycleStart rides are also a great way to learn about local cycle route.

Street Design

The Street Design project at Katrine Crescent in Kirkcaldy started in 2011. Sustrans and Fife Council are working with local residents to redesign the street to make it a better place to live in, and to cycle and walk through.
