National Route 4

National Route 4 of the National Cycle Network is the key route through Wiltshire and forms a part of the Severn and Thames Cycle Route.

It has two options - both routes connect Hungerford and Bradford-on-Avon with the routes splitting at Great Bedwyn and rejoining at Semington Bridge.

The Southerly option follows the Kennet & Avon Cycle Route between Pewsey, Devizes and Trowbridge. The route is traffic-free along the Kennet & Avon Canal towpath between Bradford-on-Avon and Devizes and on quite lanes between Devizes and Pewsey.

The North Wiltshire Rivers Route option connects Marlborough, Avebury, Calne and Chippenham and is mainly traffic-free.

Route development

Swindon and the Cotswolds

Sustrans, with partners, was successful in winning a £250,000 development grant from the Big Lottery for the Cricklade Country Way. Incorporating 12 miles of new and improved traffic-free walking and cycling routes connecting Mouldon Hill Country Park in Swindon with the Cotswold Water Park, we are nearing the end of the development phase. An outline planning application has been submitted to both Swindon Borough Council and North Wilts District Council. More information is available at www.crickladecountryway.org.uk where you can also pledge your support for the scheme.
