National Route 41 |
National Route 41 of the National Cycle Network is open between Gloucester and Bristol and is a part of the Severn and Thames cycle route. The route passes through the Avon Gorge and then mainly along the River Severn flood plain taking in Berkeley (with its castle) and Slimbridge (home to a Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve).
Route Diversion: Gloucester Docks
South of Gloucester the route follows the towpath on the west bank of the Docks and Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. Over the last few years the Docks have seen development on a massive scale, including two new road bridges over the canal, and during these works the towpath has been closed off. At long last the path has recently been re-opened, albeit that due to continuing development the re-surfacing is not finished and there are a number of obstacles. Rangers will be signing the route very shortly.

Maisemore
The flood damaged bridge at Maisemore has been repaired, tree works completed to protect the path and the path re-opened. We are pressing Gloucestershire County Council to repair the surface of the path near Gloucester where the surface is in poor condition.

Route development
National Route 41
Gloucestershire Environmental Trust have confirmed a £20,000 funding contribution to the proposed improvements which will take this route off road through Gloucestershire Airport. Further funding to build the route is being provided by Gloucestershire County Council, Gloucestershire Airport, and Grundons and a start on site is expected in January 2009. Working with Gloucestershire County Council we hope this will enable the route between the urban centres of Gloucester and Cheltenham to be signed right through and formally opened.
Cam and Dursley Greenway
Gloucestershire County Council have completed the widening and lighting of the new walking and cycling access path to Rednock School in Dursley and this also makes a convenient cycle access between Cam village and Dursley avoiding the busy main road. The path will serve the redeveloped Rednock School and is part of a package of measures including traffic calming, cycle lanes and Toucan crossings which will improve conditions for pupils at Rednock making the school journey on foot and cycle. Links to Schools funding, managed by Sustrans for Cycling England, contributed £96,000 to the capital costs.
