The route, which opened in September 2010, passes through the historic cities of Lancaster and York and also links the Forest of Bowland AONB, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Nidderdale AONB and the Yorkshire Wolds. An official route map is available from the Sustrans shop.

Route development and news

Route 65 The road bridge at Bishopthorpe, York is no longer available for young people to paint with urban art. The local council wish the walls to be kept free of art, and this will be enforced by local police.

National Route 62 patch Dearne Valley

Rotherham Council has completed a new off road section of TPT in the Dearne Valley. This now keeps the Trail off road virtually all the way from Barnsley to Doncaster, with just a short section through Harlington village on quiet roads. Work on this section has also included reclamation and landscaping of a former coal washing site, including the planting of 66,000 trees on the site.

York to Selby railway path

The Bishopthorpe section of the York to Selby route is temporarily closed to allow waterworks from 30th January 2012 until approximately 9th March 2012. A diversion with signing is in place.

Follow the link for a map showing the Bishopthorpe diversion (pdf).

Conisbrough Viaduct

The Railway Heritage Trust and Doncaster Council provided financial assistance to open up Conisbrough Viaduct providing a valuable link to the Trans Pennine Trail for Warmsworth and Edlington.

National route 66Wetherby to Thorpe Arch

Wetherby to Thorpe ArchThe section of National Route 66 from Wetherby to Thorpe Arch Trading Estate is now complete, providing a safe walking and cycling route to work and also for leisure users. The next section, including the refurbishment of the viaduct over the River Wharfe, depends upon the development of the former papyrus mill. If you want to explore this path unfortunately there is no easy train access, but rather than drive with your bikes, consider taking the bus and hiring a bike from the trading estate.

Construction here has been funded by Leeds Council's Local Transport Plan.

Aire Valley Towpath

In partnership with Leeds City Council and British Waterways, Sustrans has refurbished and resurfaced National Route 66 on the Leeds Liverpool Canal between Kirkstall Brewery halls residence and Viaduct Road. Sustrans hope to upgrade the towpath from Viaduct Road to Leeds City Centre in the near future.

Spen Valley Greenway

National Route 66 between Dewsbury and Bradford is now fully open after a partial closure in 2009 by Yorkshire Water to lay a new sewage pipe.

National route 69The Great Northern Trail

Great Northern Trail
On the Great Northern Trail our plans to complete phase one by extending the trail from Harecroft to Denholme have been delayed. However, we have been able to accelerate plans for phase two, Thornton to Queensbury, after reaching agreement with four of the five landowners on the route.

Construction here has been funded by the Aggregates Levy, Bradford Council's Local Transport Plan, and the Railway Heritage Trust.

Greetland Halifax

A new section of greenway route was completed in June 2010 in Greetland, Halifax. It provides a traffic-free route between Saddleworth Road and Rochdale Road. Sustrans hopes to connect this route to Green Lane which will allow full use of the refurbished West Vale Viaduct.
