Forming part of the long-distance C2C (Sea to Sea) route, this ride runs from Whitehaven to edge of the Lake District National Park at Cleator Moor before finishing at Sheriff's Gate. The route follows the course of a now disused railway line, built in the 1850's to carry coal and iron ore from the mines and quarries that were once very active in this area. There are many sculptures and artworks dotted along the route which reflect the heritage of the area.
The route is almost entirely traffic-free, with just one short section on-road at the start in Whitehaven. There is a gentle incline along the railway line.
From Sheriff's Gate, you could continue to Kirkland and then Ennerdale Water along a mixture of quite lanes and stone tracks and take in the stunning scenery of the Lake District National Park.
