National Route 1 sign

National Route 1

National Route 1 of the National Cycle Network in County Durham heads north from Stockton-on-Tees on the Wynyard Woodland Park traffic-free greenway towards Peterlee. The route continues on the Hart to Haswell Railway Path with the option of passing through Seaham on the way to Sunderland. The route also forms a part of the North Sea Cycle Route.

National Route 7

National Route 7 enters County Durham just outside of Allenheads and heads all the way to the coast at Sunderland via the Consett & Sunderland Railway path (look out for sculptures). The route forms an option of the famous Sea to Sea (C2C) cycle route.

National Route 14 sign

National Route 14

National Route 14 is known as the Three Rivers cycle route and is open and signed between Stockton-on-Tees and South Shields via Hartlepool, Durham, Consett and Gateshead. Most of the route is on old railway lines and is traffic-free - offering some of the longest traffic-free cycling in England. Future developments will take the route to Darlington from Stockton-on-Tees.

Regional Route 20 - Walney to Wear (W2W)

Regional Route 20 is known as the Walney to Wear (W2W) cycle route - a 'coast to coast' adventure between Cumbria's Walney Island and Wearmouth (Sunderland). The route offers two options between Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland and continues north east to Durham following National Route 14 through the city and through Hetton-le-Hole.

Route development

NCN1Easington, County Durham

Sustrans staff and voluntary Rangers are working with Easington District Council on a new project to manage the route between Haswell and Hart. Improvement and repair programmes will take place over the coming year.
