National Route 45 - Canal towpath route in Worcester resurfaced

The whole of the canal tow path in Worcester that carries National Route 45 from the River Severn in the city centre, all the way out to the rugby stadium on the outskirts has recently been resurfaced.

Sustrans secured the funding for this project from the Department for Transport and Cycling England, and the work was undertaken by British Waterways. Worcester City Council and Worcestershire County Council also assisted.

Route development

National Route 45 patch]

Recent months have seen the construction of National Route 45 from Blackstone, Bewdley to Birchen Coppice, Kidderminster.

This has been part-funded through the Department for Transport/Sustrans Links to Schools programme. The traffic-free route through Chestnut Wood (pictured) and Burlish Top Nature Reserve is now complete.

The path is an excellent example of multiparty involvement including landowners, numerous departments of several councils, Sustrans, the British Horse Society, Burlish Top Rangers and various others.

Chestnut WoodThrough Chestnut Wood, there are now two meandering tracks, one surfaced for cyclists and walkers, and one unsurfaced for horse riders. The County Council is working to connect this new section of route from Toll House Cottage to Stourport Road with a shared use path. A new Toucan crossing on the A465 is now operational. The Council aim to put an uncontrolled crossing in on Minster Road in Stourport by the end of 2007. This will link National Route 45 to the canal (National Route 54).

In Worcester, the link from National Route 45 to Nunnerywood High School and on to County Hall via Crookbarrow Way is complete.
