The eastern section of National Route 81 is currently open between Sandwell where the route joins National Route 5 and Codsall through Wolverhampton. Route development

Walsall

Sustrans and Walsall Council have worked together on the construction of approximately 800m of greenway in the Pelsall area, filling an important gap in NCN 5.  Walsall Council provided just over half the cost of the scheme, with the remainder coming from the Department for Transport, via Cycling England's Links to Schools programme.

Wolverhampton

British Waterways will soon commence work on some excellent canal tow path improvement works in the Wolverhampton area (NCN 81).  The works will see the installation of Access Steps at Lower Walsall Street Bridge and a fully DDA compliant Access Ramp at Monmore Bridge (also known as Cable Street Bridge). There are some parapet lowering works to be carried out at Monmore Bridge too.

The stretch of tow path affected by the construction works will need to be closed for the duration of the project.

Works are set to commence on Monday 7th June. The towpath closure will stretch from Monmore Bridge, past the Access at Bilston Rd and onto Lower Walsall St Bridge.
