National Route 6

National Route 6 of the National Cycle Network enters Leicestershire on the traffic-free Brampton Valley Way at Market Harborough and passes through Leicester, Loughborough and Shepshed before leaving Leicestershire on the Cloud Trail from Worthington to Melbourne in Derbyshire. This route forms a part of the South Midlands Cycle Route (Oxford to Derby).

National Route 52

National Route 52 is open between Bedworth and Thringstone via Nuneaton and Coalville. The route will eventually connect with Coventry and Warwick.

National Route 63

National Route 63

National Route 63 between Burton-on-Trent and Wisbech is currently open in Leicestershire between the Conkers Visitor Centre in the National Forest (Moira) and Oakham passing through Newton Burgoland, Ratby, central Leicester and Goadby.

National Route 64 sign

National Route 64

National Route 64 is open in Leicestershire between Market Harborough railway station and Woolsthorpe by Belvoir via Melton Mowbray. Before the route can be extended into Nottinghamshire, the Highways Agency has to provide a safe crossing of the A52 road at Bottesford though we have to date been unable to obtain any commitment to achieve this.

Regional Route 70 sign

Great Central Cycle Ride

The northern end of the Great Central Cycle Ride starts in Leicester and follows National Route 6 south out of the city becoming Regional Route 70 at Willoughby Waterleys and following country lanes to Swinford. The route continues through Northamptonshire to Winslow in Buckinghamshire.

Route Development

National route 64Melton Mowbray

Agreement has at last been reached on the route through the town centre and signs are in place. Following a light hearted competition between local junior schools, the new Links to School bridge in Melton Country Park is to be known as Troll Bridge and a name plaque is being designed and will be made by students at John Ferneley High School.

In the broader context of the Local Development Framework, we are arguing that expansion of the town towards the north offers the best hope for boosting sustainable local travel so long as the formula also allows for parallel extension of the country park. The planner's response is awaited with keen interest.
