The High Peak Trail follows the line of the former Cromford and High Peak Railway, this route takes in the stunning Derbyshire Dales countryside between Middleton Top and Parsley Hay. From Middleton Top, the trail climbs the short, sharp Hopton incline, where cyclists may want to get off and walk, before following a long, stone-built causeway into White Peak Country. You'll take in some dramatic views and travel through some craggy cuttings on the way to Parsley Hay. The trail is also rich in wildlife with an abundance of wild flowers in spring and summer.
The trail is traffic-free and suitable for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. East of Middleton Top, the trail continues to High Peak Junction, but there are some very steep sections.
At Parsley Hay the route links with the Tissington Trail which runs from Parsley Hay to Ashbourne. There is also a link using Route 54a leaving the High Peak Trail just north of Hopton to join the Tissington Trail at Tissington. This section is on-road and is steep in places so is more suited to experienced cyclists.
