Cycling through Derby

Starting near Derby city centre, this route follows an attractive path alongside the River Derwent before turning south on the Derby Canal Path to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Swarkestone. You will then join the Cloud Trail, a dismantled railway path which will take you to the village of Worthington and Cloud Quarry.

Along the way you will cross the Grade II listed Trent Viaduct near the attractive town of Melbourne. Just before you reach Worthington car park, a left turn will take you on a path around the rim of Cloud Quarry with stunning views.

Flat, well-surfaced and mostly traffic-free, this route is excellent for families and novice cyclists. This ride forms part of National Route 6 which runs all the way from London to the Lake District. From Cloud Quarry, you could continue for another 10 miles along quiet lanes and traffic-free sections to reach Loughborough where you could catch a train back to Derby.
