TfL and the Mayor start junction review – which Sustrans recommended: February 2012

In December 2011, we wrote to Deputy Mayor Isabel Dedring following a meeting we’d held to consider how London’s limited space could be better managed to accommodate the complex demands it is subject to. The meeting note Getting Along in London has obviously made some effect as TfL have now set up a stakeholder group to review major junctions on the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN). We’re pleased to be part of the strategic and technical review groups and welcome this important development.

Budget for London Greenways more than doubles: February 2012

Since 2005, Sustrans has worked alongside TfL, the boroughs and other managing authorities and delivery agencies to scope, develop and deliver a network of quietly trafficked and off-road routes which form the London Greenways network. Though much work has already been done to deliver parts of the greenways network, there is still a way to go. Sustrans has worked in a number of ways over the last year to encourage the Mayor to increase the amount of ring fenced-funding available.

Following a meeting with the Deputy Mayor for transport last year, we developed a business proposal of quick wins and major schemes which we knew were ‘ready to go’ to show just how much extra demand there was for progress. We then commissioned a study to look at the air quality benefits of London Greenways which showed overwhelmingly lower levels of air pollution on the network when compared with busy main roads.

It’s a real pleasure to hear that the Mayor has more than doubled the ring-fenced funding for London Greenways for 2012/12 and 2013/14 to £1.9m per year. This is in addition to the funding which boroughs allocate to greenway development in their area.

Greenways to cleaner air: January 2012

New research findings from Sustans provide “incredibly strong results showing the dramatic benefits in air quality on quietly trafficked and off road routes.”

A broad coalition of 10 organisations led by charity Sustrans has come together to call on the Mayor and all mayoral candidates to commit to a major increase in investment in walking and cycling as part of a wider approach to combating harmful emissions from road transport. Mayor Boris Johnson has estimated some 4,300 deaths in London were attributable to long-term exposure to dangerous airborne particles in 2008 alone. Poor air quality is having a detrimental impact on the health and wellbeing of Londoners and this group led by Sustrans is calling for rapid and meaningful action.
