Probably best known these days for Britain's tallest building, Canary Wharf, the Isle of Dogs also has a rich history. Millwall and East India docks were once among London's most important trading sites, seeing trade of timber, liquor, fruit and vegetables and grain.
This short (3.5 mile) figure of eight route starts at Island Gardens at the south of the Isle of Dogs, where there are wonderful views of Greenwich on the south side of the Thames. The route follows parts of National Route 1 through Millwall Park before doing a loop around the Millwall Docks, then back around the west side of the Millwall and Mudchute Park. The route goes past Mudchute Farm, which is worth a visit if you have small children.
On the other side of the Thames, through the Greenwich foot tunnel is a range of attractions, including the National Maritime Museum.
