The Big Pedal is back
In March 2011, over 800 schools helped us pedal to more than 600,000 journeys to school by bike in just 15 days.
Now it’s back, it’s better and – with your help – even bigger than last year! In fact, we reckon it’s the UK’s biggest school bike event.
In 2012 we want a thousand schools in the saddle. Can your school help us top one million bike trips?
Every trip to school by bike will count towards a “virtual” race round the UK. It’s all weighted, so small and large schools can compete equally. And to make it even better...
- There are now separate categories for small primaries, large primaries and secondary schools
- scooters will count towards the total, so even more pupils can take part
- we’ll have a brand new course!
Not only is it FREE to enter, there will be some fantastic prizes in each category. Last year the winner received two bikes and an amazing day with Team M.A.D., Europe’s top mountain bike team, whilst the runners-up won Cyclepod bike storage.
This year we will also have prizes for the best schools from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as regional English prizes, in each of the three school categories.
Not enough? In case some schools can’t compete for the whole three weeks, we will have three stage prizes, so there is something for everyone to go for.
When? 5-23 March 2012
Where? At your school!
Why? It’s fun. It’s free. And because in the UK nearly 50% of pupils would like to cycle to school, but less than 4% do. Don’t just take our word for it, this is what one school said last year:
“I am writing to tell you how much we've enjoyed taking part in The Big Pedal this year. We've now got hundreds of bikes parked in the school where there were probably half as many three weeks ago.”
Want to get involved?
Visit www.thebigpedal.org.uk to register your interest now – then we can let you know when more details and free resources are available (don’t worry, you can change your mind later but we don’t think you’ll want to!).
You can also sign-up to our school travel e-news to keep you updated. It’s also full of the latest news in school travel, plus any new events, resources or funding sources.
This is a free event powered by Sustrans and funded by the Bike Hub, and is open to all schools across the United Kingdom.
