Summer holiday fun for all
Stuck for ideas to keep the kids active during the summer holidays? Go for a walk, cycle or scoot! Whatever you're looking for, these activities will help you enjoy more of the great outdoors. With a little bit of planning and a lot of sunshine and fresh air, you'll soon be having a fun time.
Sustrans and its wonderful volunteers have teamed up with Globe bikes to put on a series of Fresh Air Miles bike rides on the National Cycle Network this summer. The family-friendly rides suit all ages and abilities and are a great way to discover your local cycle routes whilst getting fit and enjoying the fresh air. It's free to enter and everyone who registers to take part has the chance to win a fabulous Globe bike. Use the link to find your local ride.
As part of our celebrations for the 15th anniversary of the National Cycle Network, Sustrans is also running a short film competition. For the chance to win some great prizes, why not borrow a camcorder and turn your day out into a film-making adventure? Simply make a short video to show us what the Network means to you and some great prizes could be yours.
A computer-free day might be a novel idea to try. Explore the local area or further afield by bike instead! Take a look at our easy rides, which offer you beautiful scenery at a leisurely pace, along country lanes, traffic-free paths and forest trails. Or, challenge the kids to design themselves a circuit along local cycle routes using Sustrans' mapping, then go out and do it for real.
The National Cycle Network isn't just for cyclists. Over one third of it is completely traffic-free: perfect for those of you who just want a nice walk, or somewhere to let the little ones scoot around to their hearts' content. Why not visit a city farm, a bird reserve, a wildlife trust, a playground, a forest, a museum a National Trust property, a National Park or an English Heritage site? Don't forget your picnic!
You can also request a 'free your bike' information pack. This free pack features ideas for rides and routes in your area along with helpful advice about choosing a bike, getting it ready for riding, keeping it in tip-top condition, cycling with kids and more - all in one handy pack.
